General Info

We have been proudly serving dancers and students of dance in the metro-south area since 2000, Stevan Grebel came to Birmingham in 1970 to set The Nutcracker for The State of Alabama Ballet. He was invited to stay and develop a dance program for UAB and the community. The name was later changed to University Ballet and Ballet UAB. For 25 years, this program contributed to the community some of the finest ballet repertoire and classes in the world. Under Stevan Grebel's direction, the University Ballet was the first in the state to present George Balanchine's Serenade in 1972 with members of the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. The company toured to smaller cities around Alabama and Georgia. The company performed four times a year with the symphony, first at Boutwell Auditorium, then in the BJCC Concert Hall and Theatre. Stevan Grebel studied in Russia with the renowned teacher, Aleksander Pushkin, who also taught Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Mr. Grebel danced all over Europe, appeared on tv and in films, and danced with some of the most famous ballerinas in the world. He shares this legacy with his students today, as well. Deborah Grebel was a student and dancer with the original Alabama Ballet through Ballet UAB. She performed in many roles, from corps de ballet to principal dancer. She, too, carries this legacy through her knowledge and work with her husband. In addition to her studies and dancing experience in Europe and the U.S., she has a B.A. degree in dance and a MaEd in dance physiology and kinesiology. She has studied early childhood education and extensively researched the biiomechanics of dance. Our studio is very family-oriented and we are committed to providing only the finest dance classes and performances. No one is left out and if you have a question or concern, we will answer you promptly. Because all our students are important to us, we are dedicated to making your dance experience a special one. We strive to go the extra mile to meet your individual needs. Stevan and Deborah have three children, Russell 32, Gracie 30, Melie 25, and three grandchildren. They enjoy travel, food, and spending time at the beach.
