You might as well go to a big bank if you consider NHFCU. Chose a different credit union.

My account with NHFCU went inactive and people at the bank failed to inform me properly, as they knew my address was no longer valid, as they began to charge me fees for an incorrect address, in addition to inactive account fees. The whole time, my phone number was on file and anyone with the bank could have called me and I would have taken immediate action to reactivate my account and update my address.

Instead, NHFCU chose to drain $170+ from my account in fees before closing it and sending my remaining balance to the state of New Hampshire. It was only then, after sending the amount, that I received a call from NHFCU updating me on the situation. While I was able to retrieve my balance from the state after a couple months, my repeated requests with NHFCU for refund of fees has been met with avoidance (not returning my calls, long delays in communication). When I finally flew back to NH from California, now almost a year since that phone call that my money had been sent to the state of NH, I met with a representative in-person and filled out an official request for refund, which was soon rejected without real explanation.

I view this whole experience as frustrating and disappointing, as I have always strived to support local credit unions over big banks, but this behavior is something I would expect of those big banks.

I have been a member with NHFCU for about a year now and I know EXACTLY why I made the switch to them. Not only do they offer some of the greatest rates I have ever come across for Auto, Personal, and RV loans, but the staff is absolutely wonderful. Always ready to assist you whenever possible. If there is ever a problem, it is fixed and taken care of right away without any hassle of my own. I wouldn't want it any other way.

I had a bad experience

I had been a customer of NHFCU for many years and would have recommended them highly, until the day that my house burned down and my relationship with them ended abruptly and bitterly. Per my mortgage agreement, the insurance money for my home equity loan was to be held in an escrow account until the reconstruction was completed. For a second mortgage, it is pretty normal to just let the main mortgage holder handle that, as it would be redundant to have both banks doing inspections and dispersing the money in little increments. I sat down with the branch manager and worked that all out, and he was the one who actually mailed it all off to Wells Fargo. Shortly thereafter, their credit department went to war with me, declared my loan to be in default, made me deal with their lawyer, tried to block me from contacting their board of directors, and froze the assets in my checking and savings accounts. All this despite a near-perfect credit rating and no issue about my payment history. Needless to say, I immediately moved to a different credit union. They would not back down until I got the banking commission after them, and then the response to my complaint came from some volunteer who is not even a bank employee. I am still very angry about this incident.
