One week ago, on September 26th, 2012, my husband, a war-veteran recently redeployed 6-weeks from his fourth tour overseas, walked into Midgett Auto Sales in Harbinger, NC anticipating a flawless purchase. Steven saved an entire year’s worth of deployment money, did weeks of research on Jeep Rubicon’s, and purposefully planned our family vacation to the Outer Banks as a win-win scenario expecting to be a new Jeep owner. With a $10,000 personal check down payment, and a $7,000 loan, the purchase occurred seamlessly. Sunday, September 30th, 2012, while driving to Raleigh, Steven recognized a clicking sound in our newly purchased Jeep Rubicon. The sound progressed, and as he continued driving south to Fayetteville, the gears in his newly purchased Jeep became difficult to shift. By the time Steven arrived at our door step, the gears, the clicking, and lastly the brakes took a turn for the worst. We immediately contacted a tow truck, and had our newly purchased Jeep dropped off at Hendrick Chrysler-Jeep in Fayetteville for a thorough assessment. Monday, October 1st, the mechanics from Hendrick Chrysler-Jeep diagnosed that the Jeep had several safety deficiencies that needed immediate attention. The most immediate, a rear pinion and ring and all of the components, came with a hefty cost of $2000.00. The total damages identified by Hendrick Chrysler-Jeep came to $4000. Steven immediately contacted Midgett Auto Sales Monday. While customer service has been Midgett Auto’s mantra for 43-years, here’s an eye-opening personal experience for all to read. The sales clerk was extremely apologetic when Steven explained the situation. He mentioned that the owner is the only authority to make a decision to assist us, and that he would not be available until the following day, Tuesday, October 2nd. That same day, Steven then spoke with the Midgett Auto Sales Mechanic and even divulged that he should contact Hendrick Chrysler-Jeep directly in order to get a clearer understanding of the Jeep’s deficiencies. The Midgett Auto Sales mechanic’s immediate response to Steven was, “well, you can have the truck towed from Fayetteville to the Midgett, and we can try and fix it for you. Other than that, there’s really nothing we can do for you.” Steven sent an email to the owner of Midgett Auto Sales and expressed his disappointment in the quality of the Jeep that he had purchased. Contractually, he understood that he purchased the vehicle “as is.” However, after purchasing a vehicle from a self-proclaimed, customer service company, our family expected a little more cooperation from Midgett Auto Sales considering the vehicle was purchased less than a week ago. Steven got a call from the owner of Midgett Auto Sales on Monday, October 1st. While Steven remained optimistic about the possibility of share-cost or a good-faith gesture from the company, the OWNER made mention that his office, “rarely sold to out-of-towners, and that 100% of their business was local.” The owner recommended that Steven should have the vehicle towed (a $500-to-$1000 out of pocket expense) or drive the vehicle (it was NON-Operational on Monday) to Harbinger, NC. It is over 240 miles from Fayetteville, NC. No consolation was offered, and the Owner thanked Steven for his business before hanging up. On Wednesday, October 3rd, exactly 1-week from our Jeep Rubicon purchase from Midgett Auto Sales, Steven decided to trade it in for a safer vehicle from Hendrick. Overall, our family lost $4000.00 out of pocket for purchasing an unsafe vehicle from Midgett Auto Sales. For future car buyers in the Outer Banks, head caution.
