- Established in 1967, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is a government agency that works towards conserving and enhancing natural resources in cooperation with individuals and organizations. It operates a forestry division that is responsible for developing and implementing programs to protect and manage the state's forest resources. The department additionally maintains a water division that gathers information to assess aquatic environmental health, evaluates ecological problems and determines the success of management actions to protect aquatic resources. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources supports waste management, water monitoring and security, wildlife diversity and watershed improvement programs. The department also supports air and fisheries management, human resources, law enforcement and community financial assistance programs. It administers a geographic information systems program that develops and maintains technologies and tools to provide data management, collection, analysis and mapping capabilities. The department maintains a location in Rhinelander, Wis.
