Threatened with violence by shop owner and assaulted by his employee May 16th 2019

Here is my experience. My fiancee ( then girlfriend ) and I took our car to her mechanic, John Plew at JP Spinwrench at 6407 N. 53rd Ave. in Glendale, AZ, around February - of 2018 - with what turned out to be a faulty fuel pump. After replacing the fuel pump, he allegedly discovered that the timing chain or belt had skipped and had damaged the valves. He also stated that upon further inspection, he determined there were particles – apparently related to the timing mechanism – circulating in the engine. Instead of repairing, he suggested replacing the engine with a low mileage engine with a 12 month warranty from a local supplier.

Some time and more than $3,000 later, the car was returned to us with the “low mileage warrantied motor” but has barely run since, and within 12 months has encountered another issue with damaged valves. We returned the car to JP Spinwrench for diagnosis and warranty repair.

This ( damaged valves ) is an internal issue, which John had stated was covered by the warranty, yet he informed us the warranty would not cover the repair, and quoted over $600 to repair the cylinder head.

Our next question to the mechanic; where did you source the engine? who is the supplier? We received no response for a week, so I drove to the shop to ask in person. This is information we need to review the terms of the warranty and to confirm the engine's mileage ourselves.

The response I received from the owner, John Plew, was him immediately screaming “You’re coming here with an attitude now?” and running up to within a couple inches of my face screaming at me that I was "about to get your f****** ass kicked!!"

"for asking a question?" I asked, incredulously.

John then screamed to "get your f****** car outta here!"

to which I reminded him he was supposed to be fixing my car, and also why had he not responded to our messages?

Some more screaming followed, after which his partner, Don Plew, blocked John with his arm and moved him back, telling him to calm down.

I repeated my original question to Don, "where did you get the engine from?"

Don looked dismayed at my continued presence. "Why does it matter if they're not warrantying it anyway?"

"Where did you get it from?" I repeated.

Don's response "we get them from lots of places."

"Where'd you get this one?" I inquired.

"From a company” Don stated, turning away from me.

"What's the name?” I asked.

"I'd have to go look it up" Don said.

I then stated "Ok. Go look it up."

At this point, Don looked very displeased, and turned and approached me, also getting to within a couple inches of my person. I informed Don he was getting too close, and was getting aggressive.

"I'm just asking a question.” I reiterated.

Don Plew then quickly and forcefully grabbed me with both hands around the throat and choked me for several seconds, then released me. He then turned and went back to work.

I have filed a police report.

Bear in mind - this is MY situation. This is MY experience with JP Spinwrench, owned and operated by John Plew, and his mechanic, Don Plew ( the man who choked me ) in Glendale. These are true events that happened to me, other customers experiences may differ.

NOTE - these events took place in the driveway in full view of the shop camera, though John told the police they didn't know how to access the video...
