Detroit Edison is an investor-owned electric utility that generates, transmits and distributes electricity to more than 2 million customers in southeastern Michigan. Its system capacity is more than 11,000 megawatts. It uses coal, nuclear fuel, natural gas and hydroelectric pumped storage to generate its electrical output. Founded in 1903, the company has a more than 7,500 square miles of service area, which encompasses over 1 million utility poles and nearly 44,000 miles of power lines. The company operates various fossil fuel-generating plants and nuclear power plants. Located in Detroit, Detroit Edison is a subsidiary of DTE Energy, a diversified energy company involved in the development and management of energy-related businesses and services nationwide.
