Not only the best tamales in all of Detroit but possibly all of Michigan! Not to mention the enchiladas and Mexican sandwich all superb and second to none, and you can't beat the prices. No need for gimicks and fancy lights here just great food made by a caring family.

Provided by YP.comI've been frequenting all the Mexican restaurants in Southwest Detroit since about 1978 or so, and Evie's is one of my favorites. You might not find what you're looking for if you love flour tortillas and sour cream, but if you like fresh, authentic, home style Tex-Mex then this is a gem.
First of all the Tamales. Fresh daily are pork, spicy pork, and chicken tamales. Served as a dinner, a lunch, or by the dozen @ $5.99 with salsa to go :). I found this place years ago when a native Mexican guy at work brought in tamales from Evie's. Next I could mention the menudo (tripe soup) which is outstanding, or the caldo de res (beef rib and vegetable soup) which is to die for ! There are daily specials at about $5 including Carnitas (fried pork) and beef fajitas, pork in red or green sauce, and other staples with rice and beans. Don't forget to try the pico de gallo, a chunky mix of tomatoes, onions, chilis, cilantro and garlic, served in the natural clear juice as a salsa for $2. Not to be missed !
Evie's opens early, about 8 am I think, and closes early as well. It's almost entirely staffed by family, from Diana the Matron-Domo to Joey the nephew waiter. They treat you well because it's their family livelihood, and their reputation is at stake. Last time I was there in the early morning for Caldo the owner of the BIG restaurant across the street shared my table for breakfast burritos ! What does that tell you ?
Go....try something new...ENJOY !!!!!!!!!!
