Susan K. Tomita has practiced law since 1979. She received her B.A. at Stanford University and her J.D. at the University of Santa Clara Law School where she graduated Magna Cum Laude, and is admitted to practice in New Mexico and California. Ms. Tomita is a former Chairperson of the Elder Law Section of the New Mexico State Bar Association; has served on the Board of Directors of the Alzheimers' Association and Friends in Time (serving persons with multiple sclerosis and Lou Gerhig's disease); has served on the N.M. State Bar Association's Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services to Persons with Disabilities; and is a member of the Special Needs Alliance, the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, and the New Mexico Estate Planning Council. She is a co-author of the "Handbook for Guardians and Conservators: A Practical Guide to New Mexico Law" and of "Alternatives to Guardianship's and Conservatorships", both published by the New Mexico Attorney General's Office. She is listed in Best Lawyers in America (in both the practice fields of "Trusts and Estates" and "Elderlaw") and Martindale-Hubbell's Directory of Preeminent Attorneys. In addition to her Elder Law and Disabilities Law practice, Ms. Tomita presently serves on the Board of Directors of St. Joseph Community Health, and has served on the Boards of Directors of the Legal Aid Society of Albuquerque and Indian Pueblo Legal Services. She is a past Chairperson of the Indian Law Section of the State Bar of New Mexico. With her law partner, she co-founded Crossroads for Women, a program that provides assistance to homeless women coming out of jail or prison. She received the Archdiocese of Santa Fe's St. Francis award in 2006 and the St. Bernadette Institute's Mother Teresa award in 2005.
