General Info
“As a surgeon, I enjoy and take pride in solving complex problems and finding the best ways to fix them. Diseases of the colon and rectum, in particular, are often embarrassing or difficult to talk about. As a specialist I take joy in being able to comfort patients and work through these problems with them and their family members so they can return to enjoying their lives.” Dr. Sanchez has wanted to be a doctor her entire life. She is a native of Northern Virginia and attended the prestigious Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. Her interest in science and medicine led her to spend summers during high school working in a research laboratory at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. Dr. Sanchez was accepted to medical school directly out of high school as part of the combined seven-year BA/MD program at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She earned her Bachelor of Science with Honors in Biology and graduated magna cum laude in 2000. Dr. Sanchez continued her studies at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and received her medical degree with distinction in 2004. She was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and received the Alec Horwitz Award for Surgery Student of the Year. Dr. Sanchez remained at GW to complete her General Surgery residency and then went UMDNJ- Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey for a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery. She has co-authored several papers that have been published in variety of medical journals. She received extensive training during both her residency and fellowship in advanced laparoscopic procedures and received her Fundamentals of Laparoscopy certification from the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. Dr. Sanchez has a special interest minimally invasive procedures and new technologies. Dr. Sanchez and her husband enjoy traveling around the world in their free time.
