a little learnin'

I'm a fairly handy guy and I usually do all my own work unless the job is more than I can handle on my own. I just bought a used hot tub to replace one I had . The old one was wired for 220 the newer one could run either 125 or 220. Since 220 is more efficient and the wiring was already there I opted to do most of work of changing over to 4 pronged twist lock connectors myself and called A Bright Idea Electric basically to check my work. I really didn't have a problem with the trip charge or a little more to make the last connections. (separate a neutral wire and connect.) 4 wire nuts would do it. I just wanted a little insurance that I knew what I was doing. ( the connection box on the new tub was a little complicated)

The tech took a quick look at the job then spent as much time getting my name, address and zip to the house he just drove up to.

I was handed a job estimate of $221. Needless to say I was flabergasted. I paid the man his $49 for coming to the house and sent him on his way. I then went back to the tub, looked over the schematic one more time and made the connections myself in less than 10 minutes.

I feel pretty foolish that this company probably made the same $ not doing the job as what I think would have been fair to actually do something. Why is it that these tradesmen have different pricing for different zip codes? Why is it that certain tradesman think they have the right to gouge you if they think you don't know what's involved in the job? I work very hard for my money and expect no less from anyone who does work for me. What I want from a company I do business with is honesty I can trust. I did not find it at A Bright Idea Electric Inc. I just wanted a little hot water without getting myself in hot water.
