- Ronald E. McNair High School was named after the African-American astronaut Ronald E. McNair, who died in the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger. The school, formerly called Walker High School, has served the students of southeast DeKalb County, Ga., since 1964. Ronald E. McNair High School enrolls more than 1,200 students in grades 9 through 12. Its academic curriculum includes several subjects, such as English, art, business education, family and consumer science, mathematics, physical education, science, social studies, technology education and world languages. The school s library has a collection of more than 13,000 books, over 45 magazines, journals, nearly 900 audiovisual titles and two daily newspapers. Its counseling department provides career guidance to students. Based in Atlanta, Ronald E. McNair High School is a part of the DeKalb County School System and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
