Never A Diagnostic Charge! I started working as an automotive technician in 1972. I have been an ASE Certified Master Technician since 1974 and have owned and managed 4 automotive repair shops over the past 25 years. A lot has changed over the years... Vehicles are much more advanced, with some having as many as 6 computers on board. Tools continually change and the diagnostic equipment is outdated almost the day you purchase it. And yet, with all the constant change within the industry, the thing that really shocks me, day in and day out, is the actual cost of auto repair - to you, the customer! Day in and day out, I see or hear the shock when I have to tell a customer it will cost $1400.00 to repair that leak or noise. As much as I am an experienced auto technician, I am also fully versed in business. I can truly justify why auto repair is so expensive - equipment is expensive, having a "Taj Mahal" for a shop is expensive and needed to attract customers. Marketing, insurance, multiple phone lines, paying for technical information, stocking parts for quick jobs, corporate taxes, state taxes, payroll and payroll taxes, the list goes on. Most qualified CPAs will tell you that 40% of gross sales go to taxes and insurance Wow! As you can see, it is easy to understand why auto repair is so expensive. Can anything be done? I think so! Day after day, the more calls to customers I made, the more determined I became to "get back to the good 'ole days" and find a solution.
