- Dental CareAn effective new way to prevent tartar is a product called Oravet. It significantly reduces plaque and tartar formation by creating an invisible barrier that prevents bacteria from attaching to your pet’s teeth. While other products may remove plaque and tartar, OraVet is the first plaque prevention system. It’s a completely safe and drug-free product that adheres to teeth even through brushing. Oravet is applied by us at the time of the initial dental cleaning. The owner then applies the product at home once weekly thereafter. We will be happy to show you how to apply Oravet to your pet.
- VaccinationVaccinations are tailored to your pet's needs and risks of exposure. A lot of reasearch and debate within the veterinary profession over the last few years has centered on appropriate wellness care and vaccination protocols for pets.
- Behavioral CounselingWhen your pet has a behavioral problem you cannot solve alone, we can help you. Our veterinarians will examine your pet to look for possible physical causes of the behavior problem. If there are no physical problems to be treated, we will help you learn how to deal with the behavioral problems through training, behavior modification and sometimes even drug therapy.
- Nutritional CounselingCanine influenza is a respiratory diease that can cause coughing, runny nose, watery eyes, loss of energy, and loss of appetite. The signs of infection are similar to those of other respiratory diseases in dogs but the coughing caused by canine influenza can last for several weeks. With proper care, most dogs generally recover from this disease. However, canine inluenza can lead to more severe or even life-threatening infections such as pneumonia, and has been fatal in up to 8% of cases.
- Comprehensive ExaminationAnother important reason that we must see your pet for an annual wellness exam is to establish or maintain the "patient-doctor" relationship. This relationship allows us to legally examine, diagnose and treat your pet and includes, but is not limited to, examining your pet at least once a year to become familiar with your pet's health concerns and needs. Furthermore, the relationship must be maintained for us to dispense medications and make recommendations in the future all of which are important in keeping your pet healthy.
- Parasites Treatment and ControlBecause of the high incidence of intestinal parasites (worms) in dogs and cats it is highly recommended that your pet’s feces be checked at least once a year for these parasites. A few very good reasons to have this simple test include...
- Behavioral Disorder TreatmentWhy does my kitten need more than one vaccination for feline distemper, upper respiratory infections, and leukemia?
- Pain ManagementAnything that causes pain in people can be expected to cause pain in animals. Pets may not show the same symptoms of pain as people do; they usually don't whine or cry but you can be sure they feel pain. The pain medications needed will depend on the type of surgery performed. Major procedures for example require more pain relief than things like minor lacerations.

- Upper Respiratory Illness TreatmentA cage can be used as a home base for part of the day or it can be open all the time within an exercise area. The cage should allow the rabbit to stand up on its hind legs without hitting the top of the cage, provide a resting area and space for a litter box. It should be easy to clean and indestructible, therefore metal is probably the best choice. The floor can be solid or wire. Keep the cage in a well-ventilated, cool area. Basements are often too damp, which can promote respiratory disease. If you must house your pet in a basement, use a dehumidifier and a fan to improve the air quality. The optimum temperature range for a rabbit is 60F to 70F. When the temperature rises into the mid 70's, you may drooling, and a clear nasal discharge. If temperatures reach the upper 80's and beyond, especially if the humidity level is high, there exists a potential for a fatal heat stroke. On hot days, when air conditioning is not available, leave a plastic milk jug filled with frozen water in the cage, for use as a portable "air conditioner".
- Intestinal Foreign Object Removal
- Leptospirosis TreatmentA vaccination protocol will be recommended for your pet based on their exposure and according to the newest knowledge regarding vaccinations. For example, most adult dogs will be vaccinated every 12 months for Bordetella and Leptospirosis, but only every three years for Distemper/Parvo. Cats will require some vaccinations yearly and others every three years, and the vaccinations may be split and given separately in order to decrease the stress on the immune system.
- Parvovirus Infection Treatment
- Bacterial and Viral Infection Treatment11. A weekly source of Lactobacillus (normal gastrointestinal bacteria), such as Bene Bac powder or gel, is helpful at preventing yeast and bacterial infections.
- Ear Infection TreatmentEar infections may also cause the production of a dark discharge in the ear canals. It is important that we examine your puppy to be sure the black material is due to ear mites and not infection. Please do not ask us to just dispense medication without having the opportunity to make an accurate diagnosis.

- Diabetes Treatment
- Thyroid Disease TreatmentWellness Blood Work (Annual Health Screen): including a screening blood profile on all pets greater than 6 years of age. A complete profile and urinalysis on senior or ill pets may be recommended instead to look for diseases like diabetes, kidney disease, thyroid disease, and anemia. These types of diseases cannot be detected on physical exam alone and early intervention can significantly affect your pet's response to therapy.
- Heart Disease Treatment
- Kidney Disease TreatmentBlood pressure monitoring: Our clinic is also equipped with a blood pressure monitor to evaluate patients with cardiovascular and kidney disease as well as other causes of high blood pressure.
- Periodontal Disease TreatmentWhy is dental disease such a big concern? Pets develop dental tartar and periodontal disease just like people do, but pets cannot brush their own teeth and they rarely show any symptoms other than bad breath. This means that dental disease in pets often becomes a very serious health issue before the owner even knows there is a problem.

- Spaying and NeuteringNeutering offers several advantages. Male cats go through a significant personality change when they mature. They become very possessive of their territory and mark it with their urine to ward off other cats. The tom cat's urine develops a very strong odor that will be almost impossible to remove from your house. They also try to constantly enlarge their territory which means one fight after another. Fighting results in severe infections and abscesses and often engenders rage in your neighbors. We strongly urge you to have your cat neutered at about six to nine months of age. If he should begin to spray his urine before that time, he should be neutered immediately. The longer he sprays or fights, the less likely neutering is to stop it.
- Laboratory ServicesWe offer in-house blood testing before surgery and for anesthesia, which we will go over with you when you bring your pet in that morning. For geriatric or ill pets, additional blood tests, electrocardiograms, or x-rays may be required before surgery as well. We recommend pre-anesthetic bloodwork for all pets over 6 years of age.
- X-RayTri-City Animal & Bird Clinic is equipped with a start-of-the-art digital radiography system. Digital radiography produces x-ray images without the use of film, chemicals, or an x-ray darkroom. Instead, a digital radiography system captures x-ray images on an electronic detector or screen, converts those images to a digital format, and displays them on a computer monitor. This allows us to take "x-rays" of patients as small as parakeets to patients as large as great danes. Using computer software the x-ray images can be enhanced or enlarged making it easier to evaluate patients of all sizes. This technology greatly increases our diagnostic capabilities and is a significant advance over the use of x-ray film to take radiographic images. Furthermore, we can email your pet's radiographs allowing easy transfer of images to veterinary specialists. You can even take a copy home with you to look at on your home computer!

- Dog TrainingThe routine vaccination schedule will protect your puppy from six diseases: distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza virus, parvovirus, and rabies. The first five are included in one injection that is given at 6 – 8, 12, and 16 weeks old. Rabies vaccine is given at 12 weeks of age. There are three other optional vaccinations that are appropriate in certain situations. Your puppy should receive a kennel cough vaccine if a trip to a boarding kennel and grooming facility or if it will be placed in a puppy training class. Canine influenza and Lyme vaccine are given depending on lifestyle needs. Please advise us of these needs on your next visit.
