- Primary CareDiabetic Retinopathy: Diabetes is a disease of excess blood sugar in the circulation which can cause problems in the retina (back of the eye) which can lead to decreased or permanent loss of vision. Treatment: good control of blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol as instructed by your primary care physician. The American Diabetic Association advocates HgA1C less than 7%. Some of the medical and minor surgical (laser) intervention to treat diabetic retinopathy can be done at our office here in Hilo!
- GlaucomaIs a relatively safe, quick and painless laser procedure offered to some patients with open angle glaucoma. It makes the drainage system of the eye work more “efficiently” thereby lowering intraocular pressure in the majority of patients.

- Macular DegenerationMacular Degeneration: Degenerative disease of the macula (responsible for central vision). There are 2 types; Dry (non-exudative) and wet (exudative). Treatment: Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) dosage multivitamins/minerals (if no present or past history of smoking) and sometimes laser treatment. Some of the latest research shows intra-ocular injectable medication or low dose radiation can slow down the wet form of this disease.

- UltrasoundCataracts: Density and color changes in the human lens which cause a decrease in vision, glare and problems with normal daily activities (e.g. reading, watching television, sewing, bowling, golfing, etc.). Treatment: surgery is offered when such activities become difficult and refractive correction is no longer helpful. Intraocular lenses are placed in the eye at surgery to help correct vision. Laser is NOT used for cataract extraction. Rather, the latest technology called ultrasound is used to remove the cataractous lens.
- Computed TomographyA very helpful diagnostic tool used for retina and optic nerve pathology. We are able to see the eye at a microscopic level, “sort of like a CT scan of the eye” to help in diagnoses and monitoring progression of disease.
- BotoxBotulinum toxin is an injection placed into muscle to treat medical conditions such as blepharospasm. It is also used cosmetically to temporarily decrease the appearance of rhytides (wrinkles). The medication typically lasts anywhere from three to four months.
