- ElectrocardiogramA few days prior to surgery a general medical examination and routine laboratory tests (such as blood count and EKG) are done to ensure that you are well enough to undergo surgery. You should not use aspirin for 2 weeks prior to surgery, since it tends to cause bleeding during surgery. Antibiotic drops are generally started one day before surgery to protect the eye from infection.
- GlaucomaYou will continue using the antibiotic eye drops (Besivance) that you started three days prior to surgery. Use the Besivance 4x per day for one week after surgery unless otherwise instructed. You will also use a steroid eye drop (Omnipred 1% or Pred Forte) 4x per day until otherwise instructed. The steroid drops are required to prevent rejection of your new transplant. If you are also using glaucoma eye drops, continue to use them after surgery unless otherwise instructed.

- UltrasoundThere are two different types of surgery techniques that are commonly performed to remove cataracts. Both are simple outpatient procedures that do not require overnight hospitalization in most cases. If the surgeon is using phacoemulsification, the cataract surgery procedure will involve the breaking up of the clouded lens into small pieces, using an ultrasound device and the removal of these pieces through several small incisions. In other cases, surgeons still use more traditional methods of creating a larger incision, and then removing the entire lens intact. In both cases, lasers are sometimes used to make incisions, help to fragment the cataract, and remove the lens’ anterior capsule.
- EczemaSKIN DISEASES: The skin and the lens have the same embryological origin and can be affected by similar diseases. Those patients with Atopic Dermatitis and Eczema will occasionally develop shield ulcers cataracts. Ichthyosis is an autosomal recessive disorder associated with cuneiform cataracts and nuclear sclerosis. Basal-cell nevus and Pemphigus have similar associations.
