- Wrongful DeathWhen you visit a doctor, you are counting on his or her knowledge and expertise to be able to properly diagnose and treat your medical condition, or refer you to a specialist who can. But misdiagnoses or delayed diagnoses are common, leaving patients thinking they are being treated properly when they may not be. In many cases, early diagnosis means a better patient outcome, so a missed or delayed diagnosis can mean serious repercussions for the patient. In cases of serious illness such as cancer, it may even lead to wrongful death.
- MisdemeanorsIn the State of Iowa, it is unlawful to possess even a small amount of marijuana for personal use. First offenders can face up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000 if convicted. For second offenses, the penalties increase to one year of jail time and a fine of up to $1,875. Each additional offense is classified as an aggravated misdemeanor, and if you are convicted, you may be facing up to two years in prison and fines of up to $6,250.
- Drug CrimesPossession of an illicit drug or controlled substance can be one of the more aggressively prosecuted crimes in the State of Iowa. Possession of marijuana, in any amount, is against the law in the State of Iowa, and a person convicted of possession will face penalties depending on the amount in possession, whether or not it is their first offense, and whether the court has reason to believe there was an intent to distribute or traffic the substance. Possession of other substances like cocaine, methamphetamine, or psychedelic drugs can also carry significant penalties. Although certain controlled substances, such as oxycontin, can legally be in your possession if you have a valid prescription, it is illegal to possess these drugs without a valid prescription.
- AssaultI grew up in rural Eastern Iowa and attended the University of Iowa for both my undergraduate studies and also law school. I moved to Fairbanks, AK a week after law school graduation, driven by a sense of adventure and a love of the outdoors, to work as a Public Defender. While in Alaska much of my practice consisted of trial work and courtroom advocacy. I represented thousands of clients in a wide array of charges ranging from Fish and Game violations to Murder in the 1st Degree. Many of these cases involved complex litigation and were "high profile cases." All told, I first-chaired 20 different criminal jury trials across the state of Alaska on charges as uncomplicated as underage drinking (PAULA) to more complex manslaughter, sex assault, weapons, and aggravated assault trials.

- HomicideHave you or a loved one been harmed in a violent crime? Violent crimes can cause serious psychological and financial distress for victims and their family members. In cases where a person has suffered wrongful death as a result of a violent crime such as manslaughter or homicide, their family members can be left grieving the loss of a loved one, paying a mountain of medical bills, and struggling to get by on a greatly reduced household income. For victims who survive, their injuries can leave them with a diminished ability to work, permanently affecting their means of making a living.

- Premises LiabilityThe law allows the plaintiff to pursue a claim for damages, thereby providing a remedy so that the plaintiff can be "made whole" by being compensated for his or her loss. An example of a personal injury case is premises liability, and one of the most common types of premises liability cases is the typical slip-and-fall accident.
