General Info
You and your loved ones don’t need to travel for exceptional cancer and hematology care. The Oncology Center at Lawrence Memorial Hospital provides advanced treatments in a safe and caring environment that’s close to home. Since we opened our doors in 2000, LMH Oncology Center has been a place of hope and healing for many. We take a team approach to cancer care – experts working together across many disciplines to offer hopeful outcomes and advanced, individualized therapies for every patient. We also work closely with you – the patient – as well as your family and primary care providers to deliver personalized treatment plans and additional support. The Expertise You Need • Board-certified physician expertise: five center physicians with extensive combined experience in oncology and hematology • Specialized expertise of an advanced level, oncology-certified nurse practitioner to assist physicians with patient care • Oncology certified nursing team (OCNs) • Pharmacists who specialize in oncology pharmacy • Licensed social workers providing comprehensive psychosocial services and programs through all phases of the cancer experience • Support staff and volunteers to assist with additional resources Early detection often translates to higher survival rates and fewer side effects. Through sophisticated diagnostic technology and pathology, cancer specialists can detect many cancers and risks before they grow and spread. Our affiliates at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Breast Center offer digital mammography at three Lawrence locations and a variety of routine cancer screenings are available at LMH's affiliated primary care practices. Together, we're making sure our community has access to a comprehensive range of cancer screening and prevention tools. LMH Oncology Center shares the American Cancer Society's guidelines for early detection of cancer. Cancer Clinical Trials In addition to standard cancer treatment options like chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, transfusions and more, LMH Oncology Center offers over 150 clinical trials for cancer patients—more than any other hospital or medical center in the region. Our clinical trials are all approved by the National Cancer Institute. For patients, clinical trials mean local access to investigational therapies not available at all regional cancer care centers. They offer hope to those seeking cancer treatments beyond standard therapy—treatments that may be less toxic, more beneficial and/or easier to maintain. As a member of the Midwest Cancer Alliance, we now offer more advanced clinical trials than ever before. It’s all part of our long-standing commitment to improving cancer care throughout Kansas and the entire Midwest. For more information, contact Kari Napier, Oncology Research Nurse, at 785-505-2800. Services/Products
Our services include: Bone Marrow Biopsy: A bone marrow biopsy removes a small amount of bone, and a small amount of fluid and cells from inside the bone, to find the reason for many blood disorders. It may be used to find out if cancer or infection has spread to the bone marrow. Chaplain Services: The chaplains of Lawrence Memorial Hospital tend to the spiritual needs of our patients and caregivers. At LMH, a full-time, interfaith chaplain is on duty throughout the week, and on-call chaplains are available evenings and weekends. Medical Oncology: Medical oncology focuses on treating and managing solid tumors with chemotherapy, immunotherapy and/or targeted therapy, often involving a coordinated approach with radiation oncologists and surgeons. Hematology: Hematology focuses on treating and managing blood diseases. Our board-certified hematologists treat a variety of bleeding and clotting abnormalities, disorders of abnormal blood counts, and blood cancers such as leukemia. Genetic Testing and Counseling: The cancer risk assessment program at LMH Oncology Center is designed to identify and inform patients at increased risk for cancer due to hereditary factors. Growth Factor Support: Because anti-cancer drugs can interfere with the body's ability to make blood cells, some patients benefit from colony-stimulating factors. CSFs stimulate the production and maturation of white and red blood cells. Lymphedema Management: Lymphedema is fluid build-up that causes swelling. It is often caused by radiation therapy or lymph node removal. Qualified lymphedema specialists at LMH provide treatment and help patients manage lymphedema. Nutrition and Dietary Support: Side effects from cancer treatment can cause weight loss and nutrient deficiencies, which weaken the body's ability to fight cancer. A registered dietitian is available at LMH Oncology Center to help our patients with nutritional health management throughout treatment. Radiation Oncology: Radiation therapy delivers radiation to precise, targeted locations, a necessary treatment for many cancers. For our patients, radiation oncology services are provided next door at Lawrence Cancer Center. Social Work and Support: Licensed, compassionate social workers at LMH Oncology Center are experts at helping patients and families cope with cancer and overcome emotional and financial barriers during treatment. Phlebotomy and Blood Transfusion: Phlebotomy is a procedure that removes iron-rich blood cells when excessive iron levels threaten serious organ and tissue damage. A blood transfusion is a medical treatment that replaces blood lost through injury, surgery or disease. Tumor Conferences: Our board-certified oncologists participate in tumor conferences to collaboratively discuss cases and get simultaneous input from physicians across multiple specialties. The tumor conference setting brings together several expert opinions and facilitates a coordinated care plan.
