- OrthopedicsJohn Schulte has long been fascinated by the human body’s capacity to repair itself. Growing up, he sustained a number of injuries while playing sports. - ArthroscopyUnlike open hip surgery, hip arthroscopy is a same-day surgery in which we use a camera (arthroscope) and tools to make repairs or to get a clear picture of what is wrong. Your surgeon may call it a hip scope since the procedure utilizes a fiberoptic camera. Typically, you will only be under general anesthesia for an hour or two. Since the procedure is minimally invasive, you’ll also be able to return home the same day as your surgery.
- Minimally Invasive SurgeryGeneral hip arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgery that we do at the South Carolina Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center to diagnose and treat hip problems such as hip impingement, labral tears, and loose cartilage fragments.
- Ankle SurgeryFind out if you’re a good candidate for foot and ankle surgery by contacting South Carolina Sports Medicine in Charleston, SC, today.
- Bunion SurgeryContrary to popular belief, a bunion is not a growth or “bump” of bone in the big toe. It is actually an angulation of the joint, which can lead to pain, irritation, and even arthritis. In general, it is recommended to treat bunions without surgery as long as they are minimally painful. If a bunion becomes more severe, it is surgically correctable but it involves a substantial procedure where the bone must be cut and realigned. This surgery generally requires a few to several weeks of not bearing any weight on the affected foot. Bunion surgery can be immensely successful but must be chosen only after careful consideration.
- Joint ReplacementIf you need joint replacement surgery, either due to injury or chronic illness, you are likely experiencing extreme pain and limited mobility. Joint replacement is intended to greatly reduce that pain — often alleviating it entirely — and restore mobility to the affected area.

- Ankle SprainAnkle fractures or broken ankles are one of the most common orthopaedic injuries. They usually result from falls, twisted ankles, or sports injuries. Many times, what is thought of as just a simple ankle sprain can actually be a subtle fracture. The only way to know for sure is with an X-ray. Most, but not all ankle fractures usually require surgical fixation. Newer techniques and implants allow for early movement and possibly quicker weight bearing. If you have injured your ankle and are having difficulty walking, don’t wait — schedule an appointment at our X-ray center in Charleston, SC, as soon as possible.

- Bunions ProblemsBunions are bony bumps that form along the joint where your toe connects to the rest of your foot. Bunions can form over time, and result in a bulging lump that may be red or swollen in appearance. Despite their appearance, they are not growths, but result from an angulation of a bone in the big toe. Having a bunion may make it difficult to move your big toe, and can even contribute to ongoing pain in your foot.
