This place is a total joke! The people running it are grouchy and disrespectful! There is nothing humane about it for the animals! Its all about the money!!!

when i brought my newly housed stray cat for check ups and things they gave him unnecessary shots without consent and expected me to pay for it. also, they told me fiv is transferred through water bowls, so they clearly have very little knowledge on animals as veterinarians.

Everytime I inquire about adopting a dog from here they give me a hard time. The closest I came to even meeting a dog was a Golden Retriever that according to his bio was "perfect for a family." I stated that my husband and I had no children but were trying to start a family. I was told that this dog could not be around small children and that I shouldn't be getting a dog when I could have small children around the house. Seriously? Don't waste your time here!

Without going into much detail... my girlfriend's family gave the family dog up for adoption assuming my girlfriend wouldn't want him.. Her and I left work and drove an hour and 15 minutes to adopt the dog ourselves. I called them ahead of time and was told they can't hold the dog. I get there and the dog is still there. We filled out adoption papers but there was a family ahead of us that got to choose first. This family ended up choosing to adopt the dog. I pleaded with them and even tried to ask the family and explain the situation. The staff called a security guy who heard our side of the story and then went and spoke with the family privately and they still took him. The dog was there no more than a few hours. HS of Berks were paid to take him originally and we were going to be paid again with us adopting him, yet they still let this family take the dog. Then when I asked if my girlfriend could at least see him to say goodbye we were told we had to leave the property.



The heartbreaking part is the dog saw her and was so excited. He wanted to go see her and they just walked him into the room with the family. He's on the inside scratching and barking to come out and see us

I just don't understand why anyone would surrender to a place that is not a no kill shelter. We only deal with the SPCA, being that they are no kill. However, I am going to see if they can neuter or not for us, being that the SPCA didn't being that he was just a baby when we got him. ...

We rescued both our labs from here Charlie and Lincoln we had no problems with anyone or the process. We return often for flea tick meds

I totally disagree with these negative reviews. Last year we rescued 2 lovely pugs from Berks County Humane Society. The workers could not have been more helpful or gracious. In fact they gave us discounts on follow-up visits in addition to food and toys for our new found family members. The facility was clean and it was a friendly environment for both people and animals. We will definitely go there when it is time to rescue again.

don't surrender your pet to this place ..don't support this place..what I read on this site by a person who had the exact same experience as I did makes me sad for the animals..that woman Sandra is exactly as they named her Ice women..although I wouldn't have been so kind..they are cruel to the people who come there in distress having to surrender their pets..they are cruel and cold to people who come to give a pet a home..I would not doubt they are just as inhumane to the pets

We had to make the extremely tough decision to surrender two cats. When we walked in the door your could instantly feel that you are being judged and hated. When we told the women that we needed to surrender the cats everyone in the office looked at us and gave us nasty looks. They treated you like you were the worst person on the planet and they we harmed the animals. We got a lady named Susan that we later called the Ice Queen. She was so cold hearted toward use. As we answered question about the cats she would make remarks to the other workers about what were they going to do with the cats. Apparently the deciding question of whether the cat lives or not is if the cat has ever sprayed or peed in the house. When we answered honestly (he has only ever sprayed twice in the house) we were told that they cannot put a cat like that up for adoption they must kill him. Ice Queen calls back to the vets for them to come out and get the cats for their shots. When he sends them back she gets up and gets paperwork for use and gives us a number to call to see what happened to the cats. She then says “Beware, we will tell you the truth.” That sentence translated to us that they put the one cat down all because he sparyed in the house twice in his whole life. They did not care that they were loving and sweet. All that mattered was something that he did only twice. They never asked if the cats were loving and sweet and where we thought would be best for the cat. It was too late to demand the cat be given back to use no matter what. We walked out crying because we just knew that the cat was put to sleep even though he didn’t deserve it. As we walked out the Ice Queen was making comments to the others about who mean we were. I do believe we brought the cats to them because they were no kill and we thought the cat would have a better life with someone else then with use because we could no longer afford them. We were not the ones that killed the cat THEY DID.

My girlfriend and I adopted a beautiful male Orange and white cat, very friendly and loved to cuddle. We had him just about 3 weeks and got very attached, we took him in for a routine check up and mentioned that he breathed kinda fast, the vet thought nothing of it and proceeded with giving him a distemper shot. 3 days later he started acting very strange, he wasn't eating, drinking or playing. Just latex with his head down breathing very heavy. So next day took our cat benny, who was only 1 yr old, to the vet at the humaine society in reading. She says we have to put him down. I understand things happen to animals but I blame the humaine society for not taking a better look at him when they brought him into the shelter. And the vet gave us attitude. It was a horrible experience. I miss my baby boy, at least he got 3 weeks of good love before he got sick. I fully blame the humane society in reading pa. For the shot they gave him, which obviously reacted with his immune system. Rip benny
