Compeer is an international, nonprofit organization that helps adults and children overcome the devastating effects of mental illness. Its volunteer-based programs and services serve as a complement to therapy by providing supportive friendships to people with mental disorders. Compeer has more than 80 chapters worldwide. It serves over 6,500 individuals worldwide and employs nearly 5,000 volunteers. The organization is recognized by the American Psychological Association (APA). Founded in 1973, its staff members provide training, consultation and administrative support to several affiliates. Compeer is located in Rochester, N.Y.
