General Info
Dr. John L. Zinkel, M.D., Ph.D., is a metropolitan Detroit neurosurgeon who specializes in minimally invasive surgery of the adult brain and spine. His credentials, his clinical accomplishments, and his recognized integrity affirm that he is at the top in his field. Dr. Zinkel is: • Chief of Neurosurgery at Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe • Physician Lead at the Neuroscience Center of Excellence, Beaumont Health System • Assistant Professor at Oakland University/Beaumont School of Medicine • Education: Harvard, University of Cincinnati Medical School, Detroit Medical Center • Board-certified, Ph.D., two fellowships (spine and stroke) Among his clinical accomplishments, he: • Has performed more than 8,000 major surgeries • Was the first doctor in the country to perform a number of diverse surgeries, introducing Michigan to more than 12 new major procedures • Was the first in the nation (outside of an FDA study) to perform low-back artificial disc surgery • Has been an FDA research surgeon (for the laparoscopic Ray cage) • Holds three patents for minimally invasive surgery • Is recognized nationally among the top 10 percent of neurosurgeons, and his hospital service was recently ranked 34th in the country by U.S. News & World Report; he is also a local Top Doc Hall of Fame member. Practice Style: While Dr. Zinkel’s credentials attest to his technical skills, his professional ethics and his humanized approach are equally important. While many physicians are practicing high-volume medicine with physician assistants and extenders, he chooses to care for his patients personally — valuing quality of care over the number of patients seen. Dr. Zinkel and his patients always communicate freely. “This patient-focused approach is reassuring. It allows better continuity, with lower risk for errors,” he explains. “Certainly, the technicalities of surgery are critical to an outcome, but the human element of our profession is equally critical. Patients aren’t just incisions.”
