Create a strong mind-body connection; Relieve stress and improve mental clarity and focus.
- Intelligent & EngagingWe take an all-encompassing, functional approach to our instruction, with the modern body and modern lifestyles in mind. With purpose behind each movement, sessions are thoughtfully designed and structured to ensure you never waste time and get the most out of each session. Not to be confused with being easy or ineffective, Pilates is a low-impact and weight-bearing exercise, keeping your knees and joints free of wear and pain, while maintaining bone density. Each Pilates session is never the same. With a nearly countless number of exercises that can be customized to be increasingly more challenging, you will never get bored with Pilates.
- Versatile & UniqueBenefits individuals of all ages and backgrounds, including those who have never worked out before, seasoned Pilates veterans, women who are pregnant or have recently given birth, those with injuries or movement pathologies, and those looking to gain an edge in their athletic pursuits. Unlike traditional forms of exercise that can actually make you more prone to injury (such as running, cycling, weight-lifting, and many sports), Pilates can not only help rehabilitate the body from injuries and pain, but can uniquely help strengthen your body to prevent you from getting injured and experiencing pain in the future.
- High-Quality & ExperiencedPilates has been in practice for over a century, and more recently has become part of a "fad fitness" trend. Unlike many studios who offer Pilates without a legitimate understanding of the practice, Maiden Lane Studios is dedicated to the quality of our instruction and delivering the life-long benefits it can produce. We believe in personal attention. By closely working with clients in our private sessions and small group classes (max 3 in our apparatus classes and 12 in mat classes), we are able to tailor each session and exercise to best suit you and ensure each session is safe and effective. All of our instructors have gone through extensive and highly-respected Pilates certification programs, and have years of experience working with clients of all backgrounds.

- Pilates for Athletes: Enhance your EdgePilates is an excellent cross-training modality for sports such as golf, cycling, skiing, and running. Pilates can help athletes by strengthening smaller, supporting muscles while enhancing overall strength, endurance, and flexibility. You'll find that Pilates is extremely popular among top professional and Olympic athletes. Pilates exercises optimal biomechanics and enhances body control, allowing for more precise yet powerful movements. Pilates eventually teaches you to move more efficiently both in athletic pursuits and all aspects of life. Pilates training offsets the stress of repetitive motions performed in many sports, helping lessen wear on the body and prevent injuries.
- Safe yet EffectivePilates benefits people of all ages in all stages of life, including those who are injured and women who are pregnant or who have recently given birth. Unlike many sports and fitness pursuits, Pilates is low-impact: You won't over wear your knees and joints, allowing you more mobility through your entire life. Pilates is a weight-bearing exercise, helping to improve bone health and maintain bone density. Because of its comprehensive nature, focus on balanced training, and attention to detail, Pilates is a highly effective modality to train the body to function at its best.
- Pilates for Brides: Look your Best for your Big DayIt's effective and efficient, even on a tight schedule: Victoria's Secret models use Pilates as a quick go-to when prepping for photo shoots and their annual fashion shows. Results-driven for the big day: Pilates helps cinch the waist and improve posture, tones the arms and back, and creates a firm and lifted backside Pilates increases stamina and energy, while relieving stress. With aerobic & cardiovascular components incorporate into your Pilates sessions, you burn calories and lose weight.
- Supports your LifestylePilates is fun, engaging, challenging, and evolves with you. Pilates will help you whether you're 18 or 80, beginning a new fitness regimen, or are already extremely active. In our everyday life, where we spend much of the day sitting at a desk or driving, Pilates aids in developing proper posture and strengthens the stabilizing muscles that help you sit, stand, and walk correctly. Pilates helps prevent and relieve back and joint pain, as it opens the chest and elongates muscles that have been tightened from sitting forward. Pilates is an exceptionally distinct form of exercise because it emphasizes the mind-body connection and incorporates breath work. Practicing Pilates aids in training the mind to better understand the deep framework of the body, recognizing body imbalances, and how to correct them. Pilates also helps focus the mind while relieving stress and tension in the body.
- Pilates for Pregnancy: Safe and BeneficialWomen who are pre-natal can greatly benefit from Pilates as it specifically strengthens the core and pelvis to support a growing baby, relieves back pain, prevents incontinence, and even helps with a smoother delivery. Pilates is also effective and safe for women who have recently given birth, helping the body regain its alignment and pelvic stability, regaining a flatter, firmer belly.
- Pilates for Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation: Versatile and EffectiveFor those in various stages of physical rehabilitation, Pilates exercises can be modified for each person to gently and effectively re-train the body to move in safer, more efficient patterns of motion. Unlike traditional forms of physical therapy, Pilates trains the body to move as a whole, creating overall strength and stability, rather than only focusing on the injured part. Physicians, chiropractors, and physical therapists refer their patients to Maiden Lane Studios because we've successfully worked with all kinds of injuries, clients with spinal and orthopedic issues, neurological problems (MS), chronic pain (fibromyalgia), arthritic impairments and other movement dysfunctions, just to name a few.
- Why does Maiden Lane Studios insist on such small class sizes - other studios allow up to 10 people in their Pilates apparatus classes? Not all Pilates is created equal. Due to its numerous benefits, Pilates has become an increasingly sought-after form of physical fitness. Pilates was originally created to be taught with a high level of detail, personal attention, and skill. But with the rising popularity of Pilates over the last 20 years, there has been a flood of offerings to the market, including super-sized classes taught by instructors without proper training and experience. Not only is this type of instruction highly unsafe, it also comes from a background that lacks the knowledge necessary to deliver the many benefits Pilates has to offer. The Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) only acknowledges Pilates apparatus classes with 6 or fewer students as true "Pilates." At Maiden Lane Studios, our small class sizes allow us to work with our clients on an individual level, making each workout more effective and more tailored to the individual. With a maximum of 3 clients in our apparatus classes and 12 in our Pilates mat classes, we offer some of the smallest classes in San Francisco, at comparable prices.
- What is the difference between classical & contemporary Pilates?Classical Pilates strictly follows the original work of Joseph Pilates developed during the early 20th century. Classical Pilates is limited to his subset of exercises, without modifications, and was originally developed for the people of that era, who were primarily laborers. At Maiden Lane Studios, we offer contemporary style Pilates, which is based on the original work of Joseph Pilates but has been adapted to modern scientific standards, with a strong influence from physical therapy and the current knowledge of proper bio-mechanics. Contemporary Pilates allows us to teach for the modern body, with variations and more creativity. Contemporary Pilates exercises are generally taught in a "neutral pelvis" position (which follows the natural curvatures of a healthy spine in a standing upright position).
- Is Pilates challenging? The beauty of Pilates is that it is so customizable and benefits everyone, from someone with movement disabilities to professional athletes. Pilates can be an extremely challenging fitness modality, and has the ability to progress in difficultly with each person's practice, ensuring you are engaged and continually getting stronger.
- Is Pilates only focused on the "core" and/or stretching? At Maiden Lane Studios, we believe in working the entire body and building comprehensive strength from the core outTM. Developing a strong and healthy core is one of the keys in producing a strong and balanced body. Many people understand the "core" as the abdominals, but the "core" actually includes a complex, multi-layered series of muscles that include the abdominals, back, and hips. Strengthening your core is more than just creating flat abs. We derive our power and the ability for correct, functional movement for the entire body from the core. In all of our Pilates sessions, we focus on strengthening the core and every limb, including arms, chest, legs, ankles, and backside. Pilates incorporates movements that will stretch and "open up" the body (elongating muscles and muscle groups as well as using exercises to improve posture and open the chest from a forward flexion position), although stretching itself is not the focus of the modality.
- Is Pilates only for women?Definitely not! Many people often associate Pilates with only women, dancers, and people who want an "easy" form of exercise. On the contrary, Pilates was not only originally developed as a training method for men (for soldiers during WWI), Pilates is extremely beneficial to men in particular, for their overall health, and to increase strength, stamina, and agility. Pilates is often used by top professional athletes as a secret weapon to gain an edge on their competitors (think Kobe, LeBron, and Tiger). Pilates also enhances body control, increases flexibility, and helps prevent injuries, making it great for sports such as golf, cycling, skiing, and running. Pilates also helps offset the perils of long hours at the office, as it improves posture and keeps aches and pains at bay, while reducing stress. With the versatility of Pilates, the modality can be adjusted to varying difficulties, making it an effective and challenging workout for those who are just starting out or those who are already very active and strong.
- Can Pilates help me lose weight?Pilates can help you lose weight and reshape the body. Although Pilates is not as cardiovascular as other forms of fitness, Pilates employs resistance with endurance that burn calories and speed up your metabolism. Pilates particularly sculpts the body and works muscles that cinch the waist, lifts the behind, and slims & lengthens muscles in the arms, legs, hips. Pilates training also enhances the effects of traditional cardiovascular work outside of your Pilates practice, for example, burning more calories from running with a Pilates practice than without. Like with any other athletic pursuit, a healthy, balanced diet paired with exercise will give you the best results.
- Is Pilates safe for women who are pregnant or who have recently given birth? With your doctor's approval, starting in the 1st trimester, Pilates is safe and actually highly recommended during your pregnancy, even if you've never done Pilates before. Pilates specifically strengthens the core and pelvis to support a growing baby, relieves back pain, helps prevent incontinence, and even helps with a smoother delivery. Pilates additionally helps you adapt to the changes during pregnancy, relieving stress, giving you energy, and helping you find balance and stability in your body through the 9 months of your baby's development. For women who are already very active before their pregnancies, also rest assured that Pilates during pregnancy can still be an athletic workout. With your doctor's approval, Pilates is also effective and safe for women who have recently given birth, helping the body regain its alignment, pelvic stability, and a flatter, firmer belly.
- Is Pilates a Fad?Pilates has been around for nearly a century and isn't going anywhere. Pilates is a highly effective, life-long pursuit that can offer a life-time of benefits. With the versatility and creativity that can go into Pilates, Pilates is actually fun and engaging, and can be extremely beneficial to your body throughout your entire life. Many of our instructors and clients have practiced Pilates for more than 10 years, and swear by the practice.
- Why does Pilates cost more than other fitness practices? In some cases, Pilates on the apparatus can be more expensive, than say, a gym fitness class. This is mainly due to small class sizes, the equipment needed to practice, and the extensive training that goes into teaching Pilates. The pricing for our Pilates services is comparable to, or even less expensive than, San Francisco studios and gyms that offer Pilates. Pilates training at Maiden Lane Studios is akin to personal training, with a high level of personal attention, customization, and effectiveness.
- Can I attend a Pilates apparatus class, without previous apparatus experience?Even for those who are in great shape, we highly recommend taking either one of our Pilates Principles classes or scheduling a private session on the Pilates apparatus. In order to ensure the best experience possible and safety of our mixed-level Pilates apparatus classes, we require that students be familiar with the apparatus and mechanics of Pilates. If you have taken Pilates on the apparatus at another studio or gym, we welcome you to attend our apparatus classes.
- What is the difference between Pilates on the mat and Pilates on the apparatus?Pilates on the mat and Pilates on the apparatus are similar in nature, using core principles of proper movement and form. Pilates mat employs exercises that use body weight and small props to achieve its goals while Pilates apparatus work uses a spring-loaded system of pulleys and cables. Both can be extremely challenging and customizable, but Pilates on the apparatus can give you more training possibilities due to being able the use the machine in many ways, providing you support when you need it, while also having the option to make exercises more challenging. That being said, Pilates mat is no cakewalk, requiring the use of the body in of itself to support the body in many challenging movements. A very effective and informative mode of training, it is highly recommended for those new to the Pilates modality.
- What do I need to know prior to my first Pilates session at MLS?We provide all the equipment and accessories needed for any private session or class you attend at the studio, which are thoroughly cleaned after each use. We also provide towels, water, coffee, tea, toiletries, and keyless lockers to store your belongings. For our Pilates sessions, shoes and socks are not needed. Please wear comfortable clothing that you can move freely in, yet not too loose (so that the instructor can still see your form to help make corrections and adjustments).
- We believe we all deserve the "celebrity" treatment, with the best instructors, a high level of personal attention, and genuine care. Maiden Lane Studios carefully hires our instructors based on a number of factors.
- All of our Pilates instructors have been certified through extensive, highly respected, PMA-accredited Pilates certification programs.
- Our instructors also have several years of experience working with individuals with varying needs. From those looking to get in better shape, to clients wanting to increase their athletic performance, to those with mild to severe injuries and movement disabilities.
- With a focus and background in anatomy.Physiology, and functional movement principles, our instructors are able to tailor sessions our clients, ensuring that they are functional and effective.
- And very importantly, our instructors and staff are professional, warm, and passionate about helping our clients achieve their goals.

- Why I TeachI love what I do. I teach Pilates and barre because helping people transform their bodies in ways that allow them to excel in everything that they do, whether that's competing in professional sports, getting ready for a wedding, shaving strokes off their golf game, or just living a healthier life every day is extremely rewarding to me.
- Why I Teach PilatesI truly believe that Pilates is a gift that must be shared. It is a method of movement that simultaneously helps your body, mind, and overall awareness comprehensively stronger. Our clients feel stronger, stand taller, and are more in-tune with themselves after each session. One of my favorite comments from a client was: "my husband says I am more fun since coming here!" It isn't just about the way you look it's about the way you feel and how that resonates with everyone around you. View our Pilates page.
- Why I Teach BarreBarre is a fantastic compliment to Pilates. It's fun and results oriented where the movements help sculpt long and lean muscles. Clients feel the burn first and see the changes in their bodies soon thereafter. The most talked about change is a more firm and lifted backside. No one can complain about that! View our Barre page.
- Why I Train in Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST)As the Director of Instruction and Senior Pilates Instructor at Maiden Lane Studios, and for as long as I can remember, I've been interested in movement, anatomy, and helping others. Teaching Pilates and barre have both been great conduits for pursuing these interests, but now with the addition of Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST) under my belt, I've able to provide an even more therapeutic approach to helping others move and feel better. When I was training for my first half-marathon, I incorporated regular FST sessions to my cross-training routine, and credit the success of that first race to these sessions. FST helped with the recovery after long runs, as well as helped me maintain proper alignment and connection to my body. With these positive results, I knew I had to obtain my advanced certification in FST. FST is a comprehensive form of stretching that not only works to lengthen tight muscles, but more importantly it is a system that works from the core joints of the hips and shoulders and then into sheath of fascial tissue that surrounds muscle. Similar to Pilates, this concept of working from the core first is functional and holistic and the results from every session is staggering. View our FST page.
- My Teaching StyleI place an emphasis on the flow and transition of my classes and sessions. I like for one movement to seamlessly flow into the next in a purposeful and creative manner. I focus on full body movements that engage multiple muscle groups to work at the same time, where balance, stability, and strength are challenged. Creativity is a key element to my approach, and being able to vary movements and keep routines fresh is always a priority.

Kaley discovered that Pilates can change the body as well as the mind, and she wanted to share that with her clients. Kaley's interest in movement started at a young age when she practiced dance, rode horseback and was a competitive swimmer. - Why I TeachI genuinely like helping people and helping them learn about how the body works. I think that you learn from the clients and, as clients get better, you get better as a teacher. I like helping clients understand the strengths they didn't think they had, and to challenge them to strengthen themselves in other areas. If they can discover strength or mobility that they didn't know they had, and recognize weaknesses and imbalances that they can work to improve, then all the better.
- Why I Teach PilatesPilates to me is just like washing your face and brushing your teeth - you need to do it. It is good for the body and mind. I need it personally in my life and I think others do too.
- Why I Teach BarreI like that all the training and attention that is paid to form and alignment in Pilates is translated into active movement in barre - to have that subconscious control in the body, good form, and to fun music.
- My Teaching StyleMy teaching style is encouraging, supportive, and motivating. I like to help my clients believe that they can do more than they think, because I think we don't give ourselves enough credit for our true potential. I also want my clients to walk out of class feeling stronger and confident in themselves.

- Why I TeachI teach because I love sharing my knowledge and helping people find the connections that make the difference in their body. I love witnessing students feel empowered when they finally understand and feel something they have been working on in class. I also love helping people work against the daily routine of having to drive or sit at the computer all day.
- Why I Teach PilatesPilates is such a good counter to what we do in our day to day lives in that it helps to bring balance, flexibility, and awareness. Pilates was also very transformational for me when I was dancing. I found that with Pilates, my balance, technique and strength improved significantly. Once I stopped dancing, I knew immediately I wanted to teach people Pilates because I really believe that it is such a great method. I also had some very good instructors who inspired me to teach.
- Why I Teach BarreI love the energy that people bring to the class and the fun that we have while working hard as a group.
- My Teaching StyleI have a focus to detail and I like to shake things up and throw in new moves under a consistent theme. I would say I like to empower clients and support them during our sessions.
