The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, also known as FDIC, is an independent agency created by the Congress. It examines and supervises more than 5,160 financial institutions in the United States. The corporation is also responsible for consumer protection and receivership management. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation insures deposits in banks and thrift institutions. Established in 1933, it has a staff of over 5,000 individuals. In addition, the corporation is coordinated by the Office of International Affairs. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation maintains the Office of the Ombudsman. It also operates advisory committees and serves bankers, investors and communities. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation provides the Division of Finance Internship Program.
